Another welcome step by California, which becomes the second State, in banning use of plastic microbeads in manufacture and distribution of beauty and skin care products. New York is the first State which has recently proposed such ban.
L'Oreal is the major player in the beauty industry which is following this lead, and it has announced that it will remove plastic microbeads from its skin care products. The company has publicly acknowledged its awareness of the adverse environmental impact of polythylene beads in its skin care products.
This still leaves many other toxins which are being used in the beauty care products about which general consumers might not be fully aware of. As Peter Melchett of Soil Association, UK, highlighted :
"There is a lot of confusion about organic health and beauty products. It is wrong that people put synthetic chemicals found in general household cleaners on their skin when they thought they were buying a product made from only natural or organic ingredients. This must stop."
