A recent article by Teeneke Barresi shows the benefits that accrue by using vitamin E in beauty formulations. Herbally Radiant uses it in the anti-aging formulations to enhance their effect.
The raw material for vitamin E is derived from soybean oil distillate. It is water-soluble and enhances the effect of other ingredients in the formulation. It also serves as ethanol-free hypoallergenic, non-irritating emulsifier.
Its benefits are: protection of skin from environmental pollution, powerful anti-inflammatory action which basically prevents the signs of premature aging because the inflammatory conditions in the skin are the leading cause of skin aging, amazing healing properties.
In addition, vitamin E helps with the penetration of other compounds into the skin and is itself well absorbed by human skin.
Vitamin E has a natural affinity to
the skin but the amount of Vitamin E is reduced in the skin when exposed to
sunlight. Environmental pollutants, as well as oxidative material in the
body, cause the formation of “free radicals” which are unpaired oxygen
molecules, which wreak havoc on the cells, and cause extensive damage, that can
result in premature ageing. Vitamin E is a very effective antioxidant,
chemically mediated by the phenolic OH group of the chromane ring, and helps to
remove the formed “free radicals” and thereby ensures that oxidative damage is
lessened and decreased, by disrupting the chain reaction caused by the free
radicals.
In its top of the
range beauty formulations (Radiant and Rejuvenating), Herbally Radiant uses
vitamin E derived from soybeans. However,
the process to produce vitamin E requires a lot of soy. It takes about 20 acres
of soybeans to produce only 2.2 pounds of vitamin E. While soybeans
themselves aren’t in any short supply, the process of distilling and
deodorizing the oil to produce vitamin E has created a shortage of vitamin E.
This has often led to adulteration of vitamin E with cheaper, more readily
available ingredients such as rosemary extracts. In order to maintain the highest standard of safety and efficacy, Herbally Radiant uses only non-GMO vitamin E derived from sunflower. The sunflowers are sustainably grown in Argentina and are in massive supply, so little concern of shortage or fluctuating prices. Also, the sunflowers are non-GMO, which is hard to find with soy products.
It would be advisable if the consumers read the ingredient vitamin E on the label of the product they intend to purchase.
