CANADA RIGHTLY BANS CHEMICAL INGREDIENT SOLVENT RED 23 IN COSMETICS

It is to the credit of the Canadian government that it has been monitoring the effect of harmful chemical ingredients in cosmetic product formulations.
It has now banned Solvent red 23, also known by INCI name 'CI 26100' that is used as a colorant in many cosmetic products. The Canadian government has concluded that it is quite harmful - when the chemical bonds of this cosmetic ingredient break, 4-aminoazobenzene is released which is a classified carcinogen.
According to the Canadian government statement, "based on potential exposure of the consumers to Solvent red 23, from use of certain personal care products, and the evidence of genotoxicity and carcenogenicity, it has been concluded that Solvent red 23 is potentially harmful to human health."
