The New York Times write-up on aging today
puts forth simple tips. Advising elderly people, author Gerald Marzorati says, “You seize time and you make it yours. You
counter the narrative of diminishment and loss with one of progress and
bettering. … In this new pursuit of yours, practice is your practice: It comes
to determine the way you eat and sleep and shape your days.”
Like other body organs, skin also faces
natural wear-and-tear, aggravated by sun exposure and other factors. Underlying
our skin is a fiber meshwork of collagen and elastin -- proteins that
keep skin firm. When skin is stretched, this protein matrix snaps it back into
place. As we age, the fiber network weakens, and skin sags as it loses its
support structure.
Features of aging skin are: it becomes
thinner, losing fat; the plump smoothness of skin is replaced by a rougher
texture; gravity relentlessly tugs on weakened skin, creating the drooping of jowls or "chicken fat" under the arms.
In the natural aging that starts as early as 20’s, though not noticeable soon,
one finds decreased cellular regeneration, loss of underlying fat, thinning and
sagging of skin.
As skin specialist, Herbally Radiant advises customers that premature aging is controllable. Main cause is sun damage - referred to as the photo-aging since it is predominantly caused by ultraviolet exposure over long periods of time. UV rays break down collagen and elastin and slow the production of new collagen which aids in skin repair and gives skin its strength.
Useful
tips to prevent premature aging signs:
-Apply sun protection cream and lotions (SPF
30) to all exposed areas. UVA (aging) rays can penetrate glass so protection is
absolutely necessary. Delicate eyes and lip area need special care too.
-Take antioxidant rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Good skin
health comes with healthy diets. Green leafy veggies like kale and spinach have
some of the highest vitamin content of all vegetables.
-Include Omega-3 in diet, an essential fatty acid which promotes
healthy formation of cells, making them supple and flexible. Eat more salmon,
tuna, walnuts, kale, spinach and winter squash for softer skin.
-Stop
smoking as it causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the skin due to
the accumulated nicotine and also reduces the collagen and elastin production
in the skin causing it to age and sag prematurely
-Sugary food causes skin to dull and wrinkle
prematurely due to a process called glycation. This process causes sugar in the
bloodstream to attach to proteins that form harmful molecules called AGE’s that
damage other proteins in the skin, particularly the collagen and elastin
fibers.
-Avoid excessive drinking. Alcohol dilates blood vessels in the
skin and increases the blood flow near its surface. Taxing the liver can show
up on skin as a sallow complexion along with promoting the bad collagen (scar tissue)
to build in the skin. Blood vessels become permanently damaged over time
causing a blotchy, uneven, red look to the skin. Alcohol is also a diuretic and
dehydrates body.
-Winter protection is vital to maintain soft and smooth skin. In extreme
cold, skin requires special care against chapping & dehydration.
Moisturizers with high water content are not adequate. Good protective creams,
made with minimal water and maximum emollients are better even on coldest of
days.
-Repeated facial expressions lead to early formation of fine lines and wrinkles; as the
skin loses elasticity, the skin doesn’t spring back to its original state.
-Get enough sleep; good for health
and physical appearance. Skin regenerates itself while body is in rest. Avoid indoor
tanning – the sun lamps expose you to harmful UV rays that accelerate skin
aging.
Herbal organic skin care
formulations: The multi-billion dollar anti-aging
skin care industry, dominating the cosmetic products, is expanding as
millennials like to maintain young looks to boost personality. Many new products
claiming to prevent emergence of lines or wrinkles fizzle out.
Beauty
formulations, with natural plant-based ingredients, backed with centuries of
safety, reliability and effectiveness, create remarkably long lasting effect,
wonderfully reducing appearance of aging effects. The anti-aging formulations
launched by Herbally Radiant (Rejuvenating and Radiant range) are now very
popular for their amazing effect on all skin types. These are:
Serum: Herbally Radiant makes
three kinds , depending upon skin type: Rejuvenating, Radiant and Perfection.
These potent serums firm up and tighten the skin. Pigmentation and dark
spots are two most difficult signs of ageing to address, but these potent
serums take care of them. The combination of special ingredients in the serums
slows down melanin production, and provides antioxidant benefits.
Cleanser: We advise customers to avoid
usual soaps as they contain sulfate, creating foam and fragrance but leaving
skin dry. To remove makeup and other residue, use Cleansers. The organic Herbally
Radiant cleansers do the fine work of gently cleaning pores, preventing blackheads by controlling
the excess flow of sebum and protecting skin from acne, pimples, spots and
rashes.
Toner: The
natural toners complement the effect of anti-aging serum and cleanser, act as
multi-purpose lotions, by texturizing and refreshing skin, helping to reduce surface
oil and refine the pores. The toners prepare the skin to absorb the ingredients of
good moisturizers.
Cream: Both anti-aging creams, Rejuvenating and
Radiant, are a combination of exotic
herbal extracts, based on ancient formula used by royal houses to moisturize and
preserve beautiful appearance. Both serums contain amazing rejuvenating
properties, helping to maintain the elasticity of the skin and preserving
youthful shape.
Day Cream: Body Day Cream is a special formulation; a wonderful tonic for
the whole body, especially in winter when skin needs extra boost. It hydrates
the complexion and softens scarring over time. This concoction has essential
vitamins and minerals to keep skin well moisturized and protected.
Eye Cream: Delicate area under the eye needs special care. This highly
recommended eye cream tackles dark circles and fine lines without any
irritation. The tiniest amount goes a long way, sweep it on just at the top of
the cheekbone for the best results.
Face Mask: Three excellent scrubs-masks: Clean Scrub, Pumpkin Mask and
turmeric-based mineral face mask. The
mineral face mask, with turmeric and powerful minerals (kaolin and bentonite
clay), has rejuvenating properties; it’s like having a chemical peel without
the downtime, detoxifying skin with hibiscus. The Clean face scrub is the top
formulation for sensitive skin type. Pumpkin face mask, a pure plant-based
product, can be applied frequently for all skin types.
Silky Primer: This lotion is meant to be used under moisturizer, but ladies also love using it as a protective base before make-up for added radiance. Keeps face shining and smooth.
