The New York Times write-up on aging today puts forth simple tips. Advising elderly people, author Gerald Marzorati says,  You seize time and you make it yours. You counter the narrative of diminishment and loss with one of progress and bettering. … In this new pursuit of yours, practice is your practice: It comes to determine the way you eat and sleep and shape your days.”

Like other body organs, skin also faces natural wear-and-tear, aggravated by sun exposure and other factors. Underlying our skin is a fiber meshwork of collagen and elastin -- proteins that keep skin firm. When skin is stretched, this protein matrix snaps it back into place. As we age, the fiber network weakens, and skin sags as it loses its support structure.

Features of aging skin are: it becomes thinner, losing fat; the plump smoothness of skin is replaced by a rougher texture; gravity relentlessly tugs on weakened skin, creating the drooping of  jowls or "chicken fat" under the arms. -Sugary food causes skin to dull and wrinkle prematurely due to a process called glycation. This process causes sugar in the bloodstream to attach to proteins that form harmful molecules called AGE’s that damage other proteins in the skin, particularly the collagen and elastin fibers.

-Avoid excessive drinking. Alcohol dilates blood vessels in the skin and increases the blood flow near its surface. Taxing the liver can show up on skin as a sallow complexion along with promoting the bad collagen (scar tissue) to build in the skin. Blood vessels become permanently damaged over time causing a blotchy, uneven, red look to the skin. Alcohol is also a diuretic and dehydrates body.

-Winter protection is vital to maintain soft and smooth skin. In extreme cold, skin requires special care against chapping & dehydration. Moisturizers with high water content are not adequate. Good protective creams, made with minimal water and maximum emollients are better even on coldest of days.

-Repeated facial expressions lead to early formation of fine lines and wrinkles; as the skin loses elasticity, the skin doesn’t spring back to its original state.

-Get enough sleep; good for health and physical appearance. Skin regenerates itself while body is in rest. Avoid indoor tanning – the sun lamps expose you to harmful UV rays that accelerate skin aging.
